Oscar Lopez-Gamundi talks to HGS about "Influence of Asymmetric Half-Grabens on the Overlying Sag Traps of the South Atlantic, offshore Brazil and Uruguay." He discusses trap types in the synrift and sag sections on PSTM seismic. The tectonic setting of the rifting during the opening of the South Atlantic is centered around the presence of half grabens. This underlying tilted half-graben configuration, with a clearly defined border fault margin adjacent to the deepest part of the rift basin and a ramp margin, is widespread in the Espirito Santo, Campos and Santos basins of offshore Brazil.
In the last few years, Brazil has emerged as an important hydrocarbons player in the Western Hemisphere, largely due to the abundant oil reserves in the pre-salt basins offshore. Meanwhile, Brazil's natural gas sector has lagged behind. Despite significant natural gas reserves, institutional and financial hurdles as well as inadequate infrastructure have limited domestic production, leaving Brazil to meet its internal demand with continued imports from Bolivia and, more recently, by way of expensive imported LNG.
